Originally hand-split and finished rather than sawn, its unique surface texture and natural variations come from its 18th or 19th-century origins and centuries of wear. Key characteristics include a satin-like feel from wear, softened edges, and a subtly undulating surface from generations of footsteps. It may also have subtle marks like tool marks or occasional fossil fragments, which enhance its character.
